Nerine Tassie: Showcase
Natural spaces and forms provide the basis and inspiration for Nerine Tassie's paintings, in particular woodlands and coastal waters near her home. These landscapes are ever changing and at times daunting, providing an infinite subject matter for her work. Primarily Nerine's paintings are an exploration of the mystery of nature within this subject matter, and she has always sought to create a strong sense of atmosphere within each piece.
Her approach is a combination of the observed, experimental and the imagined, she uses a variety of layering techniques within her work both in terms of physical mediums and digital compositional work.
"I love the physicality of paintwork and so my process of working involves experimenting with base layers of varied materials. Pouring, layering, absorbing, mark marking; I try to create as rich a surface texture to each painting as I can, so each piece takes on its own developing surface and object quality."
Born in Fife, Nerine graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2002 with a degree in Fine Art. She completed a postgraduate degree in teacher training and enjoyed a career teaching Art and Design whilst also continuing with her own painting practice. In 2015, she was awarded the inaugural Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year and became a full-time practising artist shortly afterwards. Her work is held in both private and public collections in the UK and she exhibits regularly throughout the UK.
