Overview

Acquired from the private collection of the Bellany family, The Box Meeting, Cockenzie, this  major early work by John Bellany (1942-2013) is currently on view in the gallery.

The Box Meeting, Cockenzie (1964/65) is one of John Bellany's most important early works, transforming a local Scottish fishing ritual into a carefully composed, monumental painting. The "Box Meeting" was an annual ceremony in Bellany's home village of Port Seton and neighbouring Cockenzie, in which fishermen contributed to a communal fund and marked the end of the fishing season. Bellany presents this tradition as a narrative tableau, combining the detail and drama of real life with a symbolic structure reminiscent of classical painting.
Raised in East Lothian's fishing communities, Bellany's work consistently explored the intersection of everyday life and broader human themes. In this painting, he draws compositional inspiration from Giovanni Bellini's Feast of the Gods, placing ordinary fishermen within a visual language typically reserved for myth and ritual. Painted when Bellany was in his early twenties, the work demonstrates his command of scale, figure, and storytelling, qualities that would define his career.

The painting has been shown publicly on a small number of significant occasions, including display at St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh, where its themes of ritual, community, and moral gravity resonated strongly within a sacred architectural setting. It was later included in the National Galleries of Scotland's 2012-2013 retrospective John Bellany: A Passion for Life, where it was recognized as a key early achievement.

Now offered from the private collection of the Bellany family, The Box Meeting, Cockenzie presents a rare opportunity to view a major early work by John Bellany, notable for its combination of local subject matter and ambitious, classical composition.
