Marianne Hazlewood: Fine Hair, Soft Nibs - Depictions from a Shady Bed

A showcase of new botanical illustrations by the VAS 2019 Open Eye Gallery award winner. Marianne Hazlewood is an RHS and BISCOT Gold award-winning botanical artist. She works with plants, sourcing and growing her subjects to learn their nature before referencing them for her illustrations. This time spent nurturing her subjects leads to a deep connection with them and insight into their growing cycle, which lends life and realism to her work.

Hazlewood specialises in detail. She creates photorealistic depictions of the plants with which she works to demonstrate the structures, patterns and tones within her specimens. For this particular body of work Hazlewood paints and illustrates shade-loving ferns and Arisaema that she grows both indoors and in her own Edinburgh garden. These two plant groups grow happily together in shaded conditions. Striking Arisaema from the Far East grow in harmony with native ferns in her custom-built shady bed. This exhibition will feature botanical watercolours as well as new Japanese ink paste pen and ink illustrations and screenprints.
