Brendan Stuart Burns: Recent Paintings
In collaboration with Osborne Samuel Gallery London, the Open Eye Gallery presents a major exhibition of recent work by internationally acclaimed painter Brendan Stuart Burns.
Based in South Wales, it is Burns’ close relationship with the Pembrokeshire coast that has inspired a large and ongoing series of paintings, a selection of which are on display in his first solo exhibition at the Open Eye Gallery.
Burns’ paintings have a spiritual and contemplative quality to them. The fine line which separates figuration and abstraction underpins this body of work. Themes of ontology and transcendence are reinforced in intimate studies of rock-pools, stones and lichen growth, communicated to the viewer in large scale canvases full of rich impasto and bold colour.
Brendan Stuart Burns currently lives and works in Cardiff. He studied Fine Art at Cardiff College of Art from 1981 to 1985, undertaking a postgraduate in painting at The Slade School of Art, University College London from 1985 to 1987. He won the Gold Medal in Fine Art at The National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1993 and 1998, and Welsh Artist of the Year in 2000 and 2003.
