Astrid Trügg: Still

A showcase of new work by Astrid Trügg will be on exhibition at the Open Eye Gallery this spring.

Trügg is a Dutch artist based in North Berwick. Her still lifes explore texture, light and colour and are inspired by the shape, architecture and history of the objects she paints.

Trügg was born in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 1972. Having attended art schools in France and the USE, she graduated 1991 from the Utrecht School of Art with a degree in Painting. Inspired by Edinburgh and the Scottish coastline Trügg moved to Scotland in 2003 where she continued her art studies and successfully completed a postgraduate painting course at Leith School of Art in Edinburgh.

Following a period in the Netherlands and London between 2010 and 2016, she currently works from both her studio in Leith and her permanent home in North Berwick. Her mixed media works often contain fragments of old newspaper cuttings with everyday objects.

Speaking about her work, Trügg has said, 'the objects bring back memories of my childhood, family history, travels or the history it reflects. Although I surround myself with these objects, I don’t really look at them but always paint how I see them in my head.'
