Ann Cowan: Edinburgh Sketchbooks
The Open Eye Gallery presents an exhibition of Ann Cowan’s collaged scenes of the monuments and streets of Edinburgh.
Entitled Edinburgh Sketchbooks, this exhibition of new work focuses on the New Town and city vistas. Each work begins with direct observation and sketching on location. Cowan’s intention is to combine energetic pen and ink drawing with vibrant collage and acrylic to capture the essence of place rather than to focus on specific details. Daily walks on Blackford Hill have inspired new sketches of city panoramas.
Cowan spends time observing architectural structures and is particularly drawn to doorways and shopfronts with weathered surfaces, lettering and interesting juxtapositions of colour. She takes a spontaneous approach to creation through drawing on location then perfecting elements of collage and detail in her studio. As a result many works have developed directly from her sketchbooks where initial preparatory drawings evolve into vibrant compositions.
