Nicola Rawlings Jewellery

Nicola Rawlings works from her home studio in West Yorkshire where she currently combines both teaching and selling as a contemporary multi-disciplinary designer maker.

‘When asked about my work I often reflect on how as an artist I tend to explore before I create as an important part of my design process involves the sourcing of materials and ideas. My process begins as a wall of inspiration very like a mood board as I gather visuals, photographs and objects that I select for their colour, form or surface. I am constantly aware of my surroundings being drawn to particular aspects that often stimulate design ideas, combining elements to create a form of balance, which explains my use of mixed media.’

This collection, Composition, draws influence from recognisable shapes that when connected explore movement and structure using simple horizontal and vertical lines. Rawlings constructs an arrangement of elements that when joined create an impermanent pattern and network of systems. Many of the forms are constructed using assorted gauges of silver wire representing the use of line expressed within contemporary art. As with many abstract forms black areas dominate. To represent this she incorporates elements of ceramic stoneware, a media she has previously explored for its tactile surface and intense appearance. Also using rubber and vibrant elastics she creates bold contemporary statement pieces designed for the everyday and the extraordinary.
