About the artist - Jackie Anderson

Glasgow-based artist, Jackie Anderson, records moments of urban life with evocative detail and an incredible talent for invoking atmosphere. Many of Anderson’s paintings are of strangers in public places. Waiting at bus stops, people are reflected in the windows of passing buses. In shop windows the reflections of strangers are layered over others that they may have glimpsed briefly, or may not have seen at all.

In Anderson’s latest work gestural brushstrokes and near transparent washes of paint describe fleeting moments of car and train journeys to ethereal effect. Solid structures become fluid while raindrops and reflections evoke the interior environment. Passengers are captured unaware, lost in their thoughts and merged with the landscapes they are passing through. The warmth of the passing faces in Anderson’s paintings contrast the clean, industrial lines, hinting at the fragility of life within the modern urban environment. The precise simplicity of Anderson’s paintings always works towards reduction, exploring the disjunctive nature of modern life with a lyrical minimalism.

Anderson studied sociology at Aberdeen University and went on to gain an MFA from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee. She has exhibited widely throughout the United Kingdom and United States. Anderson has won a number of prestigious awards for her work, including the Alastair Salvesen Art Scholarship which allowed her to expand her practice in Trinidad and Tobago. She is a two time recipient of the international Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Scholarship. Her work is held in the collections of the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Bank of Scotland and the Fleming Collection.
